What is a book of shadows ?

A book of shadows, is a collection of spell, insights and other magical components of a 'witch'. You can have coven bos (book of shadows) which is a group of witches that work together but the obos is an online collection of member thoughts, insights, discussions, spells etc.

How do I join obos ?

First you would have to join LiveJournal and start a personal account (you can get one from here) then you may join the community of obos by going to the USER INFO page and selecting from the top 'click here if you wish to join'. If you are already signed into your personal LJ (livejournal) then all you need to do is to click here and you will become a member [opens a new window]. Now you are a member the rest of this site will help you to understand how to use and be a part of the Online Book of Shadows.

Alternatively you can select this link once you have signed in. Then you should leave a comment in the Guestbook with the subject I wish to join and in the message copy and fill out the following :-

Reason for wanting to join:
What can you bring to the group:
How much time can you give to the group:
Have you understood what is required of you?
Are you committed and loyal?
Are you happy to answer any questions that members might have?

Note: Invites are only sent out around Sabbats (8 times a year). Please check back regularly to see if any questions from members have been asked and to see if an invite has been sent. You can also check out your invites page to see if one has been sent.

Who is owner of obos ?

obos was started by a LJ member called sweetrosedragon but in June 2006 goddess_giggles took over as the maintainer. The commuity is hosted by LiveJournal and that is why you need a personal account with them to join. There is no real 'owner' as such but it is a collective work by most of the members of the obos.

How to Post In The Online Open Book Of Shadows

You can post into the Online Book Of Shadows from any point you feel.

All posts MUST be friends only! Please make sure you set all your posts to friends before you submit them. They will get deleted if not! Then you will have to re-post it.

Tags As this is a journal full of data which members can use to obtain new information from in order to make it easy to search through we use the aid of tags. These are like bookmarks like I have used on this page; for example at the end of this section there is a bookmark link saying "Back To Top", when you press it you know it will take you to the top of this page. That is similar to how we your the tags within the obos. Every time you submit a new entry with tags they get displayed at the top of the post. Then if someone wishes to search for lets say Samhain they would select the tag from the list and every post that has that tag will be displayed with out all the other posts. This is why it is important to add the tags.
All the tags can be found from the links below just click on a topic and all the details including the correct tags to use with each post. Please remember to add your live journal name in the tags for each of your posts.

To Post

  1. Go to update in your normal way (from website or using a client e.g. Semagic)

  2. Change where you're posting to from your personal journal to obos. (On the website that can be found next to the Update Journal button at the bottom)

  3. Change the Security to friends

  4. Enter a Subject. (If you are writing about e.g. crystals please don't use Crystals as your Subject because that doesn't tell any one what is within the post from the Index view, Add more detail e.g. Uses and Properties of Jade)

  5. Add all the information you wish to add in the main box

Some handy code to use with live journal to give it more impact

To add Bold put <b> text </b> either side
To add Underline put <u> text </u> either side
To centre put <center> text </center> either side
To italic put <i> text </i> either side
To add a live journal cut put <lj-cut text="type in here what is hidden"> hidden item such as an image </lj-cut>
To add an image <img src="the url link to the image">
To add an link <a href="link url to the page">Name of site</a>
    To add an user's name <lj user="lj user name"> or community <lj comm="community name">

Example of the above being used :-

    Which will look something like:

    This is a Heading
I wish to put all of this in italics to show that it is some thing to be said

I want to put a lj cut in her because I want to hide an image from the recent entries page

Now the image will be hidden in the main journal but when you click on the text it will open up and display the image on the page view of the journal. Have a go and copy and paste this and then post it in your personal journal. You can always delete it later.

  6.  Add all the tags that are relevant to your post e.g. questions, tools, tarot, [your lj user name]

  7. Then all is left is to either press Update journal or Submit.
